The Man Behind the Teardrop Eyes: Samuel J. Butcher (1939–2024)
Samuel J. Butcher was a man defined by a profound sense of purpose, a deep-seated faith, and an unwavering devotion to his family and friends. While the world came to know him as a visionary artist, those closest to him knew a man of immense humility who found his greatest joy in the Lord and in the simple act of making others smile. He was a devoted family man and a loyal friend, known for his quick wit and a joyful sense of humor that could put anyone at ease. To Sam, his art was more than a career; it was a lifelong ministry.
Sam’s path was one of remarkable dedication and humble beginnings. Born in 1939 in Jackson, Michigan, he was the third of five children in a family of modest means. His resourcefulness as a young artist was legendary; he often found himself drawing on rolls of paper rescued from a local factory dump—a testament to his belief that beauty and inspiration can be found anywhere if you have the eyes to see it.
This spiritual foundation was laid early in his childhood, rooted in fond memories of his grandmother telling him Bible stories. These stories sparked a deep interest in spiritual things, and even as a young boy, he began painting scenes from the Bible. Though he studied hard and won awards throughout his school years, Sam often spoke of an emptiness and lack of fulfillment he felt inside—a void that academic or artistic success alone could not fill.
His life reached a defining crossroads one night in a small country church, where he heard the message of salvation. Responding to the invitation to ask Jesus into his heart, Sam made a life-changing decision: from that night forward, he would use his talent for the Lord. With his mother’s encouragement, he pursued formal art training after high school, winning a scholarship to the College of Arts & Crafts in Berkeley. It was there he met his college sweetheart, whom he married before moving back to Michigan to begin a career with the Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF).
Sam began his work at CEF in the shipping department, but his talent was soon recognized, and he was promoted to the art department. In the early 1970s, his "Quick Draw" talents on the children’s television program The Treehouse Club began to capture hearts, but it was his private sketches of children with captivating, teardrop-shaped eyes—drawings created specifically for his family and friends—that would change his life forever. When these sketches were first brought to life as porcelain bisque figurines in 1978 by Enesco, Sam’s primary reaction was one of overwhelming gratitude that his message of faith could now be shared in a tangible way.
Throughout his life, Sam’s philanthropic heart was as vast as his talent. He believed that the "Gift of Love" was meant to be shared with those in need, leading to decades of dedicated work with underprivileged children and global partnerships with organizations like Feed the Children, Easter Seals, the American Cancer Society, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, and Shriners Hospitals for Children. From the creation of the Precious Moments Chapel to his support of international missions, Sam felt a profound responsibility to use his success for good—a mission of "loving, caring, and sharing" that remains at the core of the company today.
In 1989, Sam fulfilled his greatest spiritual and artistic dream by opening the Precious Moments Chapel in Carthage, Missouri. Often described as his "gift of Thanksgiving to the Lord," Sam spent years on scaffolding, hand-painting 84 murals and designing 30 stained-glass windows. He was a constant presence at the Chapel, often found personally greeting collectors with a joke and a smile, making every visitor feel like a member of his own family. To ensure this masterpiece would be preserved, he established the Precious Moments Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to the preservation and protection of the Chapel, as well as the care for the grounds and daily operations, so that families can enjoy this masterpiece for generations to come.
When Sam passed away in 2024, he left behind more than a storied brand; he left a roadmap for a life lived with purpose, humor, and unwavering faith. His final figurine, Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus, was his parting message to the world—a reminder to keep our focus on what truly matters. We carry his memory forward with an immense sense of honor, dedicated to stewarding the company and the memories he created, ensuring the world stays a little kinder in his honor.
