The Story of the Brand: A Fifty-Year Legacy of Love

The story of Precious Moments didn’t begin with a business plan; it began with a prayer and a pencil. In the early 1970s, artist Samuel J. Butcher started drawing soulful, teardrop-eyed children as a way to share his faith with family and friends. Known as "Quick Draw Sam" on the children’s television program The Treehouse Club, he possessed a rare gift for bringing complex messages of love and devotion to life through simple, heart-tugging illustrations.

What began as a small line of greeting cards and posters blossomed into a global phenomenon in 1978 when Sam met Enesco President Gene Freedman. At a gift show in California, Gene recognized that Sam’s drawings were more than just art—they were a "language of the heart" that deserved to be brought into the three-dimensional world. Around the world, Precious Moments became known for its beautiful, hand-painted porcelain bisque figurines featuring children with captivating teardrop-shaped eyes. When Sam was presented with the first porcelain bisque sample of "Love One Another," he was moved to tears. This single sculpture birthed the "Original 21" figurines, igniting a tradition of meaningful gift-giving that would eventually reach every corner of the globe.

The 1980s and 90s marked a "Golden Age" for the brand, as Precious Moments became a cultural touchstone. By sharing common values of loving, caring, and sharing, collectors formed a close-knit, yet far-reaching global community. Family, friends, neighbors, and coworkers bonded joyfully as they celebrated everyday moments and special occasions with Precious Moments figurines. The community grew into a massive family, celebrated through the Precious Moments Collectors’ Club, which at its peak reached hundreds of thousands of members. This era was defined by an unprecedented scale of connection—from the excitement of the first Precious Moments cruises to the heartfelt gatherings at the Chapel Family Reunions.

In 1989, Sam fulfilled his greatest creative dream by opening the Precious Moments Chapel in Carthage, Missouri. Built as a message of gratitude for the gifts God had given him, the Chapel stands as a sanctuary of peace and a "living masterpiece", with over 9000 square feet of hand painted murals that Sam continued to paint and refine for the rest of his life. In recent years, through our internal efforts and those of our licensing partners, the Precious Moments product line has expanded to include baby clothes, children’s books, nursery décor, eco-friendly toddler mealtime sets, home décor, home entertaining and serve-ware, garden décor, and more. The common threads woven throughout all Precious Moments gifts and décor are the inspirational messages that lie at the heart of each product we create.

With the passing of Samuel J. Butcher in 2024, the brand entered a new chapter—one defined by the honor of stewardship. Sam’s final figurine, Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus, served as a parting message to us and to his beloved collectors: a reminder to keep the focus on faith and the enduring power of love. While Precious Moments has evolved with the times, we remain true to Mr. Butcher’s aspiration to make the world a kinder place by helping people share love. Today, we are continuing the legacy he left us. Through the Precious Moments Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to the Chapel, we ensure that his masterwork remains open for generations to enjoy. We are here to ensure his memory is stewarded with care, and that the "Gift of Love" continues to be shared for years to come.
