Christmas Traditions Around The World

While many of us share similar holiday customs, it is beautiful to see how the spirit of the season is expressed across the globe. From the "first star" in Poland to carols under the summer sun in Australia, these global traditions remind us that the "Sharing the Gift of Love" is a universal language.

Explore these wonderful ideas from around the world and discover a few ways to add a touch of global culture to your own traditions this year.

England: Cozy Hearths and Festive Crackers

The holiday season in England is often cold and foggy, making a warm fire the heart of the home. On Christmas Eve, families gather to hear a reading of the classic Dickens tale, A Christmas Carol, before children prepare for a visit from Father Christmas.

  • Father Christmas: Children toss their letters into the fire so their wishes can travel up the chimney! He is said to arrive on a sleigh pulled by wondrous reindeer to fill stockings with treats. Many families celebrate this arrival by adding a new piece to their annual Santa and Angel collections.

  • Christmas Crackers: A highlight of the midday feast, these festive paper tubes make a "pop" when pulled, revealing small toys, jokes, and paper hats.

  • Boxing Day: The celebration continues on December 26th. Historically a day for filling alms boxes for the poor, it is now a time to give small gifts to service workers and enjoy local plays called pantomimes.

  • The King’s Holiday Address: After the midday feast, many families gather to watch the King’s annual holiday address, a cherished tradition that brings the nation together in reflection.

Australia: Carols by Candlelight

In "the land down under," Christmas falls during the summer break. Instead of snow, Australians decorate with ferns, evergreens, and beautiful blooming flowers, often exploring new arrivals for the season to find fresh ways to brighten their homes.

  • A Heartfelt Tradition: One of the most popular events is "Carols by Candlelight." Started in 1938 by a radio announcer who didn't want anyone to spend Christmas alone, the event now celebrates 87 years of bringing people together to sing by candlelight.

  • A Welcoming Light: Many families set a large candle in the window on Christmas Eve to welcome the Holy Family, a tradition often led by the youngest child.

Ethiopia: Ganna and Spiritual Reflection

Following an ancient calendar, Ethiopians celebrate Christmas (called Ganna) on January 7. The focus here is deeply spiritual, often involving fasting and prayer.

  • A Time for Fasting: As part of their Orthodox tradition, many take part in a vegan fast before the holiday, resisting indulgence to focus on the true wonders of the season.

  • Try it at Home: Consider a "digital fast" or giving up a common habit for a few days before Christmas. Each time you resist the urge, say a short prayer of gratitude to stay present in the moment.

  • Christmas Day: Instead of exchanging gifts, the day is centered on faith, with many attending a 4:00 AM mass. You can bring a similar focus on the Nativity into your home by browsing our full Nativity collections.

Poland: The First Star and the Manger

In Poland, the season of Advent is a time of quiet anticipation. The peak of the celebration is the Christmas Eve meal, known as Wigilia.

  • The First Star: Families eagerly wait for the first star to appear in the night sky before sitting down to dinner.

  • Twelve Dishes: The traditional meal features 12 meat-free dishes, symbolizing the 12 disciples.

  • A Humble Reminder: To remember the manger where baby Jesus was born, many families place a small amount of straw under the tablecloth. This is a beautiful time to display annual Santa, Snowman amd Angel collections that represent the joy of the season.
